Released in 1978, the JR-S401. Offered a departure from the common styling with an impressive industrial look that boasts many high-end features!

Near identical to their Top Of The Line JR-S501, this monster offers a whopping 85 W/Ch with an impressive 0.03% THD! In addition to the Dual VU Meters, one of the primary features is JVC's SEA Graphic Equalizer, which provides ±12 dB equalization at five center frequencies.

It also has direct back panel access to Pre-Out & Main In so you can choose to add any number of components to upgrade your system, from a Graphic Equalizer to electronic crossovers for multi-amplification networks! You must also take notice of the FM Detect feature. While the Quadraphonic FM technology never caught on, it did require higher quality components throughout, which means you still reap the rewards even though its unlikely you'll ever use the " FM DET Out " jack! The 5-Band SEA Equalizer and Volume and.

Balance sliders , it has buttons for Speakers, Input, Subsonic & High Filters, Stereo/Mono, FM Muting, SEA Record, Tape Dubbing and a Loudness button to contour the sound dynamics perfectly for low level listening. Aside from some pitting to the lid, there are just a few light front panel scuffs, some too faint to make out well in the pics. Some of the text below the volume control is worn as seen in the pics. On inspection, this unit worked fine with just a little scratchiness and. To the controls, but they all go to our tech for the usual servicing.

Some of the lamps were still working, but as they were most likely going to fail soon anyway all the lamps were replaced with Blue LED's, which shine through with a richer color. Even the Stereo and pointer lamps were replaced so you never have to worry about them. In fact, we weren't happy with the lack of illumination the unidirectional LED's give on these pointers, others just resort to using an incandescent. But as longevity is the whole idea behind the LED upgrade, our tech has come up with a custom way to install a 1-segment LED that illuminates the pointer much better. Lid is removed & unit is inspected to determine if any attempted amateur repairs exist that need to be corrected, or substandard parts that need replacement. The exterior, all knobs & plexis are cleaned & detailed. While the front panel is removed for cleaning, all attachments are re-glued and dried out foam inserts replaced. All switches & pots are be cleaned internally with Specialist Contact Cleaner (proven superior to DeoxIT by our customers), while those with special needs receive the less aggressive DeoxIT F-5.

All lamps that are out, or believed to be prone to failure, are replaced if necessary. LEDs are used whenever compatible. Any faulty components, or those with known issues, such as jacks, fuse-holders, feet, etc. All PC boards are inspected; all questionable solder joints are re-flowed.

All electrolytic caps are inspected for bulging or leakage, those that are at risk or have known issues are checked with the Huntron Tracker (allows evaluation while in-circuit so component does not need to be removed). All questionable caps are replaced with brand new parts, not NOS! DC offset is adjusted & channel levels are calibrated & balanced. Front panel is cleaned & detailed before reassembly.

Cabinet is cleaned & detailed, those with wood are polished with Old English. After servicing, we set it up on our test bench and it did not disappoint, both channels drove our speakers with the powerful, warm, distortion-free signal these analog receivers are known for. All inputs and features were confirmed operational and the tuner spins smoothly. Even though we are in a remote area it was able to pull in all our local FM stations with the internal FM antenna, centering the tuning meter and lighting the Stereo lamp. What a great find for the vintage audiophile!
